Spending time outside means having more exposure to sunlight which may increase the risk of developing skin cancer. We all know the importance of applying sunscreen when we’re outdoors, but according to WebMD it is also important to understand the different types of coverage in your sunscreen.
Every sunscreen shows a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) number for UVB protection. What this number means is how well the sunscreen protects you from a sunburn or how long it extends the time needed to get a sunburn. It’s recommended to use a SPF 30 or higher.
The UVB rays are not the only ones to take into account. It is recommended that the sunscreen has UVA protection too, because the Ultraviolet A rays can harm you as well. On the bottle of your sunscreen take a look at the label for UVA, broad-spectrum or multi-spectrum protection.
These products are not waterproof, but some of them are water resistant and this helps them to last longer in your skin.
Because all of us sweat during the day, the effect of the sunscreen starts to vanish, so look at the instructions in the bottle about how often it is recommended to reapply the product.
Finally, make sure the sunscreen you’re using is free from chemical exposure.
