Many of our clients have asked us for clarification about the difference between a yearly physical exam, its coverage and a Medicare Wellness Visit.
According to UnitedHealthcare the physical exam focuses on trying to find out what’s wrong with your body. In a physical exam, when you are sick, the doctor is trying to find the causes that illness and take all the actions needed to help you get better or to feel better.
The Wellness exam, on the other hand, when you are healthy, focuses on what has been working for you and tries to keep you on that wellness path.
Medicare Made Clear® also publishes achart where they explain some of the services that may be covered in a physical exam and the ones that may be covered in a Medicare Wellness Visit, clarifying that you should ask your physician and your Medicare plan provider which services are covered and which ones are not.
They also pointed out that Medicare does not cover an annual physical exam and that the exams and tests needed are separated services and may have an extra cost depending on your Medicare plan.
