This article is based on the Slideshow: A Visual Guide to Enlarged Prostate (BPH) from WebMD
What is BPH?
BPH is a prevalent condition among aging men in which the prostate gland gradually enlarges. It affects over 50% of men aged 60 and above. While some individuals experience symptoms, others do not. It’s important to note that BPH is not cancer, and it does not lead to cancer. The prostate gland, situated beneath the bladder, plays a critical role in semen production.
Common Symptoms:
- Frequent Urination: An enlarged prostate can increase the urge to urinate, particularly at night. This symptom can disrupt your sleep and daily activities.
- Difficulty Urinating: BPH may lead to a slower urine flow, dribbling, or the sensation of incomplete emptying after urination.
- Inability to Urinate: In advanced cases, complete urethral blockage can occur, necessitating immediate medical attention. This condition can result in permanent kidney damage if not addressed promptly.
Who is at Risk?
BPH is most commonly associated with aging, with up to 90% of men experiencing symptoms by the age of 85. The exact causes of prostate growth are not fully understood, and it is not related to vasectomy or sexual activity.
Early Diagnosis Matters:
If you experience any of the aforementioned symptoms, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider. BPH symptoms can overlap with those of other medical conditions, including prostate cancer. Prompt diagnosis allows your doctor to rule out other potential causes and recommend the most appropriate course of action.
Living with BPH:
BPH is a common part of the aging process, and some men may never experience symptoms, while others may face challenges. Open communication with your healthcare provider is essential to maintaining a high quality of life.
By discussing your symptoms and concerns, you can develop an effective plan tailored to your individual needs.
Age should never hinder your pursuit of good health.
Stay healthy and well!
