National Pet Day

I think we can all agree that this spring has been much anticipated and needed! With the unprecedented amount of rain we received this winter in California, we are truly enjoying the full bloom of the poppy flowers, the warmer weather, greener pastures everywhere and we can finally store our umbrellas away. At least there is no forecast of April showers.

Mother nature gave us a beautiful day to celebrate Easter (for those of us who celebrate it) and Passover.

The 3rd Friday in April is Clean out your Medicine Cabinet Day and a great reminder to look at expiration dates and how to properly dispose of expired medicine.

On the 15th we have our deadline for Taxes, April 22 is Earth Day and the rest of the month we have several awareness days, but one that I can’t help but to mention is National Pet Day. For as long as I can remember, we’ve always had a pet. Growing up my first pet was a bunny, then a dog, cats, hamsters and then more dogs! From Saint Bernards, to Great Danes, to Brazilian Filas to rescues, my dad taught us to love and protect animals.

When I had the opportunity and the stability to get my first pet, I took a test to find the perfect breed for my lifestyle. I was matched with a Hungarian Vizsla. He was my first four-legged kid.

Our beloved Figo passed away in March of 2020 at almost 14 years old. I often think about the happiness he brought  our family over the years, how he would let my daughters use him as a pillow and how he thought he was a lap dog. My youngest daughter was especially attached to him and when we knew the time was coming for him to go, it would be devastating for all, but especially for her. She had been asking for a small dog for years and we finally agreed to welcome Daisy to our home. Little Daisy, a Cavalier King Charles, brought Figo back to life for a full month. I think it was Figo’s way to teach her the way into our home before he felt it was ok to pass on the baton. I miss my Figo every day and have found in Daisy a great companion as well. So on National Pet Day, I want to remember the unconditional love and company that pets bring to us. If you have a pet, share a picture with us and tell us any unique characteristics they have.
