At West Compass Insurance, we believe in empowering our community with the knowledge to save lives. October marks Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Awareness Month, a time to bring attention to this critical health issue that affects thousands of lives every year. Sudden cardiac arrest is a life-threatening emergency where the heart suddenly stops beating, cutting off blood flow to vital organs. Without immediate intervention, SCA can lead to death within minutes.

Key Differences Between SCA and a Heart Attack

Many people confuse SCA with a heart attack, but they are not the same. Sudden cardiac arrest is an “electrical” problem where the heart stops without warning, often affecting individuals who may have no prior heart conditions. On the other hand, a heart attack is caused by a blockage in the coronary arteries, reducing blood flow to the heart muscle. Both conditions are dangerous, but the immediate response to each differs.

Recognizing SCA

To act quickly, it’s essential to recognize the signs of SCA:

  • Unconsciousness
  • No breathing or only gasping If you notice these symptoms, it’s critical to take immediate action.

The Importance of CPR and AED Training

If someone collapses due to SCA, administering CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) can increase their chance of survival. CPR helps maintain blood flow to vital organs until professional medical help arrives. Additionally, using an AED (automated external defibrillator) can help restart the heart’s rhythm. AEDs are easy to use, with voice prompts guiding users through the process.

At West Compass, we encourage everyone to take a CPR/AED course. The Red Cross offers both hands-only CPR training (chest compressions without rescue breaths) and full CPR/AED certification, providing the knowledge and confidence to act in an emergency.

Every Second Counts

For each minute that passes without CPR or defibrillation, the chance of survival decreases by 10%. That’s why knowing how to perform CPR and use an AED could mean the difference between life and death for a loved one.

As we recognize Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, let’s all take a moment to prepare ourselves to act when it matters most. Being informed and ready could save a life.
