August is National Immunization Awareness Month, making it a great time to check whether you’re up to date on the vaccines your doctor recommends. Staying current on your vaccinations is one of the simplest ways to help protect your health before cold and flu season arrives.

The good news is that Medicare covers many of the vaccines recommended, including the annual flu shot, pneumonia vaccines, COVID-19 vaccines, shingles (Shingrix), RSV, and the tetanus booster (Tdap). If you’re ever unsure whether a vaccine is covered by your plan, just give us a call. We’ll be happy to look it up with you before you schedule your appointment.

One vaccine that’s worth mentioning is Shingrix, the vaccine that helps prevent shingles. Unlike your flu shot or pneumonia vaccine, Shingrix is covered through your Part D prescription drug plan rather than your medical benefits. The same is true for the RSV vaccine and the Tdap booster. Your annual flu shot, pneumonia vaccines, and COVID-19 vaccines are covered through your Medicare medical benefits.

And if you haven’t scheduled your Medicare Annual Wellness Visit yet, this is a great time to do it. It’s the perfect opportunity to talk with your doctor about which vaccines are recommended for you based on your age, health history, and lifestyle.
